I know this is going to sound like a stupid question, but you have tried it with the actual card in the reader, right? Mandrake also thinks mine is a 32MB scsi drive (because that's the size of my smart media card). But it only recognizes it with the card in. If I boot without the card in it, it gives an error on scda1. So I told it not to auto-mount. Then I can put the card in and mount it manually whenever I want to.
I'm using an Olympus D-460Z and it only has a serial connection which is just too slow to suit me. I ended up paying $19.95 at the local Staples and got a PNY Smart Media reader, figuring that I could always boot into windows to use it. But to my suprise, it works fine with LM 8.1 (at least after I changed the fstab entry to msdos instead of vfat). You might try turning off devfs (or on, if it's off) and see if that makes a difference. I believe one of it's purposes is to help with the detection of USB devices.
