sorry ... not enough coffee yet ... what i meant to ask was, "shouldn't he be able to ping even without samba installed?" ... with apache on my linux box, i could use a browser to reach the linux box with no problems ...
apache is installed on the Linux bos, there is also a server on the XP box, netiher can see each other
