Dave, yes, that's easy - just don't let the installer format /home or /usr during the install. Choose expert mode and you'll get the option to leave these as is. Note however that it's possible that this approach will create some inconsistencies you may need to work around. e.g. If you have applied updates, some settings in the paritions you leave unformatted could possibly conflict, but you are unlikely to see "serious" problems from this.
If your need to reinstall is because of problems, maybe trying to fix them is also an option. Plenty of help available here if so.
