One last problem (since Dennis & Charles helped me to fix both my CD Burner and ATAPI ZIP drive problems (THANKS!)) with my Linux-Mandrake 8.1 PowerPack system, which is running on a Celeron 533 with 256 megs of memory.
My system boots into TEXT mode (since it is primarily a server), but occasionally, I need to start X Windows as root. I know, I know you're not supposed to use root, and I know about su, but I need to log in as root from time to time. I'm running Ximian Gnome and Sawfish 1.01. If I launch "startx" as another (non-root) user, it works just fine. However, when I launch "startx" as root, I get a blank GUI screen (with mouse), but no icons, windows, task bars, etc. What I have noticed is that, when launching Gnome, there is a splash screen which reports as various Gnome modules are loaded. When I "startx" as root, this list is very short. When I "startx" as another user, there are many more modules that are loaded. Any ideas? I'm not sure where to look for error logs or anything...
