Yep, you are correct...  Tis a bad thing to update a kernel.  If you see 
an updated kernel you want, _install_ it.  It is a different name than 
your current one so will just add to your boot options rather than try 
to run using your older kernel's modules.

NOTICE TO ALL:  There is a nearly 1-1 relationship between updating 
kernels and singeing ones eyenrows off.
