I tried switching to sendmail but it too failed, message "failed to exicute
mailer program/usr/sbin/sendmail.(the change was made in settings-configure
Kmail)

I thought that at first, but I left it until this morning and tried again to
see whether
late last night they had a systems overhaul, but no, and in anycase the same
server is accepting Outlook Express emails OK.Also Kmail accepts emails.
