Hello list..... Now I'm having a problem. Hitherto every Mandrake install from 7.0 --> 8.1 succeeded flawlessly (..well, sort of). Yesterday I received my pre-ordered set of 8.2 (7 CD's). As usual (after backing up everything to CD), I shuffled the first CD into the cupholder and invited some friends to watch the best distro ever doing an install of a full-featured linux-sytem.....
Well, I have to admit that the laughing were on their side ! About 1 minute into the install-process, after deleting the old partitions, and allocating new ones as usual, the message appears : "depslist.ordered mismatch against hdlist files" ....Certainly a very informative statement, eh ? Well, I handed my friend a round of cool beers and proclaimed : "No problem, I'll just let it check for bad blocks : same result ! Then I tried ALL the filesystems : Reiser, XFS, JFS, ext3 and finally, ext2. To no avail. Still the same depslist-stopper. Hmmm... maybe a bad CD ? - Well , out went the CD and into my laptop. And you know what ? - No problems ! - Only my laptop is from the jurassic age and accordingly a bit reluctant. But it works. Conclusion : the CD is OK ! Another round of beers. Then another try at the workstation : somehow I succeded in getting past the "informative" message and into the part where one can select the packages. And guess what : I was offered to install 4 MB ! - Nothing else, nill, nada, zero ! Now, after another round of beers, I figured that somehow the hardware was exhausted and had died.... Nope ! Just to prove my point I injected the Mandrake 8.1 CD : What a relief ! -Everything installed in about 20 minutes. - Everything ! Well, now I'm back in ye ole 8.1 and happy again. But my friends will never - ever - convert to linux. They prefer free beers. Kaj Haulrich Denmark
