Thanks for your help.  Tried all that, to no avail.  Permissions OK - 644
on all the zip files.  I also tried logging in as root - no dice.  Tried
./install --interactive.  Placed trace statements in the install script -
everything appears to go OK but setup runs for five seconds only -
installer reports "Installation complete".  No OpenOffice.org1.0 directory
in /usr/local, or anywhere else.  No point in going back to user.

I guess I shall have to wait until an RPM is available.
