Rosemary, I have not kept up on this thread, but, did you check "enable
acpi" on boot up in lilo. If not give it a try, all of my usb devices
worked after I enabled acpi. HTH

How do I go about that? I've used mc to look at lilo.conf, is that the
one? There are a couple of entries that have acpi in them, but nothing
which obviously (to me) says enable, or not.

Thanks

I know you are trying to get a handle on the cli thing, but I am not to well versed in it. I would use mcc and boot then "set up how the system boots" and put an x in "enable acpi" box. In lilo it should show as something like acpi=yes or similar. HTH

After my last message I went to MCC and checked the "enable acpi box". Tried the reader in every usb port, and looked at usbview, still nothing. Tried lsusb, just to be absolutely sure - still nothing. <sigh>

Not sure if you are aware of this, Rosemary, but enabling acpi is a function that affects the kernel - it can't change itself while it is running, so any change you make won't take effect until you reboot.

The options that I'm aware of are acpi=ht, acpi=off, and acpi=on. Whenever I install a new kernel, it automatically sets itself to acpi=ht. With that option, I have no sound, and no graphical lilo for booting, and with earlier kernels I had problems with shutdown too - I can understand a kernel option affecting the booting & shutdown, but the sound??? Anyway, I now always change it to use acpi=on, which resolves all problems.

You can edit the lilo.conf file manually, but you must run lilo as root afterwards, and then reboot. I suggest you try all the options, and see if any of them work for you - if it can affect my sound, it might affect your usb!
