While they share the win32 codecs, mplayer and xine have separate 
implementations for using those codecs, which means that mplayer plays files 
xine doesn't and vice versa.  Usually when one works out how to cope with one 
weird file format, then the other catches up a version or two by copying the 
code.  Same with DVD navigation and the like.
