OK - the best physical way to set up a network is to use a switched hub - they 
are not expensive - and a NIC in each box, connected to the hub by a cat5 
cable.  That's easy if they are physically fairly close, though re-wiring the 
whole house is more problematic :-)

Best of all is if you can spend a little more to buy a router that includes 
some hub capability.  They are often described as having two or four RJ45 
sockets.  If you can do that you configure the router to be the gateway to 
the Internet, and both computers connect through that.  It's easy to get this 
set up with the help of the list.  HTH
