What I had to do was boot to 'linux 1' - at the lilo splash screen hit Esc, then type 'linux 1' - and change the user password. It seemed that once it had had a problem it would not authenticate the root password either. The new password had to be a minimum of 8 letters and not based on a recognisable dictionary word. After that I had no more problems.
I don't know whether this is a MDV level or at kernel level, but I resent the fact that I am being told what I can and can't do. I should be able to make my own decision about the level of security required. Anne -- Registered Linux User No.293302 (http://counter.li.org/) Have you visited http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org yet?
