The only hard part I have found about running a GUI program over a SSH
link is that you need to know the command to start the program, instead
of picking it from a menu. But running programs this way tends to be
faster then trying to run a remote VNC desktop over a slow network
connection.

If you need a full remote desktop, then VNC is the simplest way to go.
There are instructions for setting up a VNC connection over SSH, but I
have not played with it. Another way is to run your remote window
manager in an Xnest window on the remote machine. The Window manager
uses Xnest as its display, and the Xnest window is displayed on your
remote desktop. I would use one of the light-weight window managers for
this, but that is up to you. Basicly, you would do something like this:

Statx X on local machine.
Open an xterm (Or equivelent)
ssh -CX <remote machine>
(The -C and -X options are probably enabled by default, but make sure.)
run "Xterm :5 &" on remote machine.
(Window opens up on you local display.)
run "blackbox -display :6" on the remote machine.

You should now have the Blackbox window manager running in a window on
your local machine.
