Okay, I also don't know if anyone else has had a similar problem since I have never seen it noted. I recently bought a new computer (yay me) and along with that computer was a new Asus DVD Burner. The computer came pre-assembled from the OEM and aside from a few initial issues, it seemed to be just fine. Until I tried to burn a DVD and ended up getting various errors from cdrecord. So, just to be sure, I booted up in Windows and did a burn with Windows and it was fine. Did some checking on forums and so on for issues with cdrecord and Asus DVD drives. Ran across a notation from someone who was having problems upgrading the firmware of the DVD drive and a suggested solution was to switch over to an 80 pin cable if they were using 40 pin.
So, just to be sure, I pulled the existing cable off the drive and switched the cable with an 80 pin that I had sitting around. Tried to do a burn and it went without a hitch. So, if anyone buys a new computer and then has issues with cdrecord, especially write issues and error 254 on exit, make sure that you check your cables from the OEM and confirm that they are not using 40 pin cables in place of 80 pin cables.
