Thanks everyone. My problem was partially solved but evolved into another one.
When I had 10.1 installed my external USR modem worked fine
Once 10.2 was installed it would dial, successfully handshake and connect but not log on. So I reinstalled 10.1 and found that the problem was 10.2 did not offer Kppp which seemed to be the bridge between the modem and the operating system.
So I tried to upgrade with the three LE 2005 set of disks.
All seemed to go well during the exception of the following: "nvidia (6111) Installing module. Kernel source for 2.6.1-6 mdk not installed. Cannot install this module."
At the conclusion of the installation I end up with the following:
"Mandrakelinux release 10.2 (Limited Edition 2005) for i586.
Kernal 2.6.11-6 mdk on an i686 /tty
localhost login:"
I login as owen
"last login: Tue. Jan 21 04:52:17 on tty1
[EMAIL PROTECTED] host ~]$

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I been working on this for two days. I now consider myself a sub novice newbie.

Not meaning to jump in here, but I just ran into the same thing. I do have other Linux boxes, however, and a LAN connection. To answer your second question, the wvdial version I used was the one for 10.1, I think (wvdial-1.54.0-2mdk.i586.rpm). You will find a dependency for libwvstreams.so.3.74 which is satisfied by:
libwvstreams3.74-3.74.0.4mdk.i586.rpm
Your 10.1 disks may have these (I don't have 10.1, so I can't say for sure). If not, do a search with the winbox for those two rpms, install the libwvstreams rpm first, then the wvdial rpm. You don't need urpmi, those two rpms are the complete wvdial package.
