Sorry to take so long to get back to you - I had to think on this a bit.
 As I see it, there are a couple of possibilities. One would be that you
have a problem in your config file. The one that has gotten me in the
past is the WIRELESS_IWCONFIG="key restricted" - if I forget the "s, it
does not work. (You have to remember to use the "s in MCC too...)

The second is that you need firmware for your NIC. I have one that needs
it, and if the firmware is missing, I get:
"3rdparty/at76c503a/at76c503-fw_skel.c: firmware
atmel_at76c505-rfmd2958.bin not found" in /var/log/messages. (It is a
pain having to remember that when I upgrade kernels.)

The third is that they changed the NIC without changing the model number
or the USB ID. That is not suspossed to happen, but it does... I am not
sure what you do in this case.
