In a console, run 'alsamixer' (there is a gui, but for this purpose you are best using the text mode). Navigate by arrow keys, and see if you can find any setting that makes a difference. If you can, you will have to do a save and make an entry that causes it to restore when you boot up. I'll look out the commands for you if you get to that stage.
