I remember a thread a while back where someone had problems with
externel modems that would disconnect right after connecting. I was
reminded about one simple cause of this the other day when I had to
repair a setup like this. The problem was caused when they moved the
modem, and had to unplug the phone line. When they plugged it back in,
they plugged it into the wrong phone jack on the modem.

At first glance, you wouldn't think it would make a difference - they
are both phone jacks, right? Well, it does make a difference on some
externel modems. One jack is labled "line" and the other "phone". The
thing is, some modems disconnect the "phone" jack when they get a
connection. If you have the phone line plugged into this jack, then as
soon as the modem has connected, it ends up hanging up the phone.

The reasion for this arangment is so that you can have a phone or fax
machine plugged into the "phone" jack, and you don't have to worry about
someone picking up the phone or sending a fax while you are online.

On a side note - this reminded me of a batch of Zoom modems that had the
labels reversed. I had one person that started yelling at me that he
knew how to plug in the modem when I was starting to explain this. He
insisted they couldn't come from the factory that way - the labels were
engraved in bracket. But plugging the phone line in the "phone" jack
fixed the problem.
