My desktop system (mandrake 10.1) use to power down fine. I rebuilt my kernel to support a nv graphics card and the p4 HT (and maybe changed some thing else, I cannot remember!) It now does the same as you describe. While shutting down my machine reports a seg fault. I cannot remember which p4 chip it is, I will post later. I have not been bothered trying to fix it so cannot offer an answer...
