My guess would be that you have a computer that is poorly or not supported via ACPI, or APM or whatever you may currently be using. You might try switching from one to the other. Check your Lilo.conf load line and if you have acpi=ht currently, try removing it to see if that helps, or add acpi=off, etc. Normally, powerdown commands via software are handled by either APM or ACPI support. If one of those doesn't work on your system, try switching to the other.
