. Thanks to those who provided their help. Now it seems that I manage to see commercial movies. I have four DVD films at home, and three of them are played fine. The next test I'm going to do is playing burned DVDs. I'm reporting all the steps I did. Cheers, Rodolfo From internet I downloaded the following packages: libdvdcss-1.2.9.tar.gz, libdvdread-0.9.4.tar.gz, xine-lib-1.1.0.tar.gz and xine-ui-0.9.23.tar.gz, and put them in my `/tmp directory. From there I installed them in the above order with the usual configure, make and make install circle. Example: $ tar xzvf libdvdcss-1.2.9.tar.gz $ cd libdvdcss-1.2.9 $ ./configure $ make # make install . During the installation of xine-lib the following message appeared: **************************************************************** xine-lib will be installed to /usr/local/lib This path is not mentioned among the linker search paths in your /etc/ld.so.conf. This means it is possible that xine-lib will not be found when you try to compile or run a program using it. If this happens, you should add /usr/local/lib to the environment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH like that: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH Alternatively you can add a line "/usr/local/lib" to your /etc/ld.so.conf. **************************************************************** , but there were no consequences. After the four installations I removed the files ~/tmp/libdvdcss-1.2.9.tar.gz, ~/tmp/libdvdread-0.9.4.tar.gz, ~/tmp/xine-lib-1.1.0.tar.gz and ~/tmp/xine-ui-0.9.23.tar.gz and the directories ~/tmp/libdvdcss-1.2.9, ~/tmp/libdvdread-0.9.4, ~/tmp/xine-lib-1.1.0 and ~/tmp/xine-ui-0.9.23, inserted the DVD disk into my DVD player and did: $ xine .
