FROM EXPERIENCE, the best thing to do is to chuck the "WinModem" that you have 
and get an external 56k data/voice/fax modem. Why?
1.) No drivers necessary
2.) Very little configuration
3.) Does not use the computer to do it's processing - it does it all itself
4.) Does not interfere with the kernel
5.) Does not require extra modules or drivers or firmware

Sorry to be so drastic, but, as stated, FROM EXPERIENCE (and you can go 
through the list's archives for proof in the putting), internal "WinModems" 
are a severe headache, waste of time, and waste of a perfectly good PCI slot 
in your system.
