Yep a win modem can be a big PITA. Most of the winmodems with the lucent
chipset can be made to work in linux. A few others can also be made to work
in linux. For a linux oldtimer it can sometimes be a bit rough to get those
winmodems working in linux.
I would recommend finding a used external modem on ebay. DO NOT get a usb
modem. Find a modem with a serial connection. Almost any external modem with
a serial connection should be fine. For what it is worth I have had years of
great performance from US Robotics Sportster modems and modem blaster modems.
Both can generally be found used on ebay for around 10 dollars or less if you
shop carefully.
