I did another fresh install and things were still the same. As it
turns out, although Mandriva recognized my monitor and ATI graphics
card, it seems to have picked the wrong driver as a default. I was
getting an error telling me to change something. There aren't many
options to change so I selected another driver. Things seem to be
working fine now.
