It turns out that I had a single line in /etc/hosts that read:

127.0.0.1 192.168.0.1 192 e5200 localhost

Changing that to:

127.0.0.1 e5200 localhost

solved what I thought was a problem with Konsole and Emacs showing a
different machine. Now they both show e5200.

That was/is there.

This was part of the problem. When I disabled the firewall completely -
turns out it didn't work to just allow Samba - a grouped named Mdkgrp
showed up on the Windows machines and I can now reach the Linux machine
from the Windows machines. I still don't see Windows machines from the
Linux machine though, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right place.

Unfortunately, I'm on 2005. It sounds like I should upgrade to 2006 though.
I'm a Mandriva club member, so 2006 is free for the download, but I'm out
in the country at the end of a very slow dial-up connection, so I may have
to bite the bullet and pay the $85 for the CDs.

I can't find this explicitly on 2005, but, as I say, the Windows machines
can now see the Linux machine.

Unfortunately running PrinterDrake and asking for it to "Auto-detect
printers connected to machines running Microsoft Windows" still results in
a "No printer found" message.

Is it perhaps necessary to first install a driver for the printer on the
Linux machine to enable it to detect such a printer on the Windows machine?

Many thanks for you help.
