Hate to say I told you so (hey, doesn't hurt to try), but I was talking from 
personal experience. 

The flash install program has be written to check for the existence of 
Netscape. Firefox is similar enough (the chrome directory and all that) that 
it works. Anywhere else it refuses. They could have just given a warning and 
an option to proceed, but they don't. The problem is with the flash plugin 
installer itself. Other plugins may not have the same problem.

I haven't tried to run java within konq (in fact I haven't bothered with Java 
at all on linux, trying to keep things as open as possible). But check the 
configuration options for Java. Perhaps it's disabled by default. Or maybe 
there's some option there you have to tweak.
