Reconfiguration and test gives the same result. Mouse
wheel moves things sideways instead of up and down.

It's a Logitech PS2 on a Belkin KVM to the PS2 port. I
can't change it. Thanks though.

I had the same thing happen to me when I hooked up my Mandriva 10.1 machine to a Zonet KVM without shutting down first (probably not supposed to do that). Next time I rebooted, it fixed itself, though.

But there is something in /etc/X11/xorg.conf that controls the mousewheel interpretation. Look for a section like this:

Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Mouse1"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
    Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"

^ try changin to 4 5, log out, restart X (Ctrl+Alt+BkSp), an log back in.

EndSection

I believe it's the ZAxisMapping that controls the mouse wheel interpretation. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what numbers you need. The Mandriva install picked these numbers for me, and I'm not sure exactly what they mean. You might find something in the newbie archives. Or maybe an X expert here can be of more help.

A run of 'drakmouse' (as root), an choosing your correct mouse type should also fix it. Log out/in as above.
