I had the same problem; a search on logitech laser gave me a config for the
mx1000 (I have the mx610) but that didn't quite do the trick. I experimented
a bit with different suggestions and here is what worked for me:

My section of input device section in xorg.conf

Section "InputDevice"
# Identifier and driver

    Identifier  "Mouse1"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol"   "ImPS/2"
    Option "Buttons"    "7"
    Option "Device"     "/dev/input/mice"
    Option "ZAxisMapping"   "6 7"

and then I created .Xmodmap in my home directory with the following in it:

pointer= 1 2 3 6 7 4 5

I don't get full function of the mouse but I get what a really needed.
