Thanks a lot for your responses.
I know 10.0 is old, nearly a year. But I did not take the time tto install it until now, when I was really fed up with SUSE 9.1.

I downloaded from ftp://ftp.rediris.es/pub/linux/distributions/mandriva/10.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS
according to Kaj's recommendation,

and chose to install directly. But no installation succeeded, every time I got the
"unsatisfied"
message up. (Dependencies? But the message was rather cryptic) I tried to
install various glibc's first, but that did not help.

NB, since I am new to Mandriva I not familiar with the sw installer, so I did not find
any "import" facility (import from my download directory to install the .rpm)
Red Hat rpm and SUSE Yast has this property, but I may have missed something.

To ET:
I tried to look for gcc as root, but konqueror did not find it.

Then, urpmi:
The website recommended:
Also, you might want to type urpmi.removemedia -a first, in order to
reinitialize urpmi's setup.
I did this. Then I found no more programs in the program setup list.
But Kaj is right, I am not familiar with the software installation tecnique in
Mandriva - yet.

This is what happened, I am sorry that I picked the UK mirror first instead if
Spain. Slip of the mind.

Strange. The gcc compiler *should* be on every Mandrake release.

My first advice is to set up online sources for your Mandrake version :
1. go here : http://easyurpmi.zarb.org and follow the instructions very carefully, clicking on the *proceed* tabs as demanded. And read the advice about *urpmi.removemedia*. When selecting sources, I'll recommend the Spanish *rediris* (assuming you are in Norway).
2. When finished, as root run : urpmi gcc

Secondly, because version 10.0 is rather old, it's possible that some of the mirrors no longer support it. For example, your Norwegian *uninett.no* doesn't. But you can find gcc for your version here :
ftp://ftp.rediris.es/pub/linux/distributions/mandriva/10.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS
