I agree with ET that mixing cooker and non-cooker is not the
best solution in the world. But I found a better solution, which
I wrote about yesterday, but essentially what I did was open
MCC, Hardware, and Printers. That itself took forever to open.
Because my printer is shared on another Mandriva machine, I hit
the option that turns off local printing, turns off the local
CUPS server, and sends print jobs directly to the remote (in
this case, on the other side of my desk) printer.

Now the speed is back to normal. I'm guessing that CUPS is
incorrectly ignoring the default printer setting and trying to
locate a local printer before using a remote printer, which may
or may not have been fixed in the cooker version. At any rate,
all is well with my machine.
