Paul,

LILO gives you that error because it can't identify the 'vmlinuz' of
your Kubuntu. 

So you can overcome this by making a folder in Mandriva's /boot
(say /boot/kubuntu..) and copy the 'vmlinuz' of Kubuntu to that folder.

Then do the same thing for it's "initrd"

Make the changes of your lilo.conf as following...

# Kubuntu

image=/boot/kubuntu/vmlinuz
        label="kubuntu"
        root=/dev/hda3
        initrd=/boot/kubuntu/initrd.img
        append="mem=1024M"
