Not an OOo Base user myself, but have you tried something like creating a new database first then using Import to load the data rather than Open? Or perhaps Open then Save As or Export? OOo Base will let you browse an Access Database if you open it directly (e.g. for a mail merge), but you certainly won't be able to save to it as mdbtools does not provide write support yet. I know OOo Base uses a Java database backend called hsql (or something like that) for its native format, but then renames it odb. You can use a number of programs to import the mdb into any database you like, but sqlite would probably be the closest equivalent to mdb. You can try programs like Knoda, Kexi and Rekall, all of which use mdbtools to import mdb files.
