i have an older pc that i've loaded with linux/ms dual-boot and will
give to a couple whose old pc bit the dust. they say their isp was/is
aol. my questions:

1. does aol require their own software to connect/authenticate, or
will any conventional dialup/authentication sequence work with them?

I ain't dealt with A$$holes On Line in years, but it is my bet they ain't changed that much. AOL is NOT an ISP, any more than Compuserve or prodigy was an ISP. the internet you and I connect to is connected to AOL's servers, but when you dial into an AOL server, you do not really connect with the internet, you connect to AOL's proxy servers. their mail is not SMPT, pop or IMAP compliant and you MUST only use their *windows* *only* login software.

get them a real ISP, and refuse AOL even stronger than you refuse Billy Gate's toys, I promise AOL is even worse...

2. does anyone know of any free dialup isp in the US? there used to
be some, just don't know if any still operate.

maybe not totally free (you get what you pay for) but check into 'juno' and 'peoplePC'

i have ethernet installed in the pc as well as a modem, just not sure
dsl is an option financially, so i'm going with the dialup. also,
english is not their strongest point, so getting straight answers is a
bit of an exercise.

thanks for any help,
joe

while DSL may not be an option, they may be able to use cable broadband just as well so don't forget to consider that.
