I'm most likely missing something here, but I purchased a few months ago a Western Digital 40Gb Passport USB external hard drive and installed MandrivaLinux 10.1 without any problems at all. Well, one problem, for some reason the Passport didn't like EXT3 and kept trying to claim it's file system was VFAT/EXT3 when I made more than one partition. So I had to make only two partitions -- the main one and a 1Gb swap partition. Once installed, I did have to go into the fstab and fix the swap device record (changing it from VFAT/swap to swap). After that, I copied over my home folder to the Passport (i.e., I plugged the Passport into the USB port on the desktop, mounted it, and copied everything using mc), made some appropriate configuration changes in the Passport copy (e.g., the modem on my portable connects to the USB port, while the modem on my desktop connects to the serial port). I now use the Passport to boot up any computer I'm at (except my desktop), but particularly I need and use it for my portable which has no working hard drive. Sometimes, one has to make a change in the BIOS -- the computer must see the USB port as a possible boot source -- my desktop says CD first, then USB, then internal hard drive. So when I want to use the Passport to backup my home folder on the desktop, I wait until after the desktop has booted up before plugging in the Passport. I've experienced no problems whatsoever with using the USB external hard drive in this fashion. It sounds to me that you're trying to do what I did. I can't quite grasp what the problem you're having is. deedee Registered Linux User #327485 WordStar Users Group Community: http://wordstar2.com Mailing Lists: http://wordstar2.com/mailman/listinfo -- _______________________________________________ Search for businesses by name, location, or phone number. -Lycos Yellow Pages http://r.lycos.com/r/yp_emailfooter/http://yellowpages.lycos.com/default.asp?SRC=lycos10 ____________________________________________________ Want to buy your Pack or Services from Mandriva?
