It is frustrating to have things change without my

Again this morning I cannot mount a win2k box that was
working fine yesterday on the 2006 box. The winbox was
locked up this morning and I rebooted it with extreme
prejudice.

However, I can see the public share on the 2006 box from
the winbox (but not the homes share).

Is there a tool that will help me diagnose the darn
network? Apparently the smarter I get, the dumber I get.

Hi Lee. I see that you're still having fun with that Winders box, huh? Your post above uses the word 'again', which I take to mean that this isn't the first time that the Windows box has locked up?

If you're trying to resolve the problem just for the sake of resolving it, I'd start looking at things like firewalls, anti-virus programs, and spyware (all on the Win2K box), and if that doesn't do it, have a look at the power-management, do a ram test with Memtest86, and then consider your power supply in the Win2K box. Also, if the Windows box is over-temping the CPU, that would do it.

Any and all of these could be affecting the Windows box - causing it to crash, lockup or refuse to play 'nice'.

The permanent solution would be to transfer anything important from the Windows box to a Linux system, activate Samba on that Linux box and let the Windows box connect to Samba for it's files.

One more idea here. If the Windows box has more than one partition, try reformatting the extra partition(s) to FAT32 instead of NTFS and then share the partition. If Windows security (is that an oxymoron?) is being testy, this might help.

At least the OEM's are starting to wise up to this. Some of them aren't setting up the newer huge drives as one big honkin' partition anymore.

As for a tool, I think you're SOL buddy. Hope I'm wrong about that but,....me no think soooooo.

Jeez! And I thought I was having a rough day! Grin!

Good Luck.
