I don't know how to access the files on my external hard drive?
I am a newbie novice so suggestions need to be on a elementary level.
Here is what I find in the Mandriva 2006.0 Linux Control Center
Go into Devices (on your desktop), all devices are listed here. your usb hard drive should appear as something, probably sda.

You don't, by chance, have SoS (Seer of Souls) set up as your sources, do you? I had the same problem a while ago. Turns out there was something wrong with the "hald" and "dbus" RPMs from SoS. I had to remove those repositories and go back to the ones I used before (Proxad, if anyone is interested). Then urpme'd "dbus" and "hald", urpmi'd the same, re-logged in, and USB devices now show up auto-magically!!
I don't know if the SoS RPMs are fixed now.
