Hey - not so dumb, given the dumb problem. :-)

Yep - that just brings back the prompt after an 'authentication
failed' message.

'Root', as user, just blanks the screen, switches screen colors a few
times in the course of a rather long pause, then brings back the USER
prompt. Never gets to the password prompt. Same with 'guest'. Looks as
though it 'knows' about those users, but won't let me enter a
password. The behavior for these two is quite different from what
happens with other words as user.
