Hey - not so dumb, given the dumb problem. :-) E> but have you tried leaving everything blanc and hitting enter? Yep - that just brings back the prompt after an 'authentication failed' message. E> or root w/ empty space as password? 'Root', as user, just blanks the screen, switches screen colors a few times in the course of a rather long pause, then brings back the USER prompt. Never gets to the password prompt. Same with 'guest'. Looks as though it 'knows' about those users, but won't let me enter a password.
