This came out (if I remember correctly) around win95 launch...........

Recall what Ken Thompson said: "The Unix automobile, unlike most
automobiles, has neither speedometer, nor gas gauge, nor any of the
other numerous idiot lights which plague the modern driver. Rather, if
the driver makes a mistake, a giant '?' lights up in the center of the
dashboard. The experienced driver," says Thompson, "will know what's
wrong."

Then there's another version I heard once that went something like this:

The Unix car would not have a tachometer, nor a speedometer, and no
odometer. However, there'd be a light, and if it was on, you'd have to open
the trunk while driving (if you have the root passwd, also you might
have to restart
trunkd), then you could look at the readings for the tachometer,
speedometer and
odometer there. It would also have some statistics on how well your
tires are doing,
whether or not you should get an oil change, and some other pertinent
information. But, if trunkd crashed, or ometerd, or tmeterd, or
smeterd crashed, then
this information wouldn't be available, and trunkd would start acting
up. But if you
looked at the logs you can usually see what's going on.
