I am pretty much in the same situation as you: I play around with linux but for 
compatibility with
my professional work environment do the "serious things with Win.
However, I have not had serious problems with what I use of linux (IP maskerading 
between other
things) only with the window environment (be it X or kde or gnome which is what I use) 
I am
actually considering trying fvwm which I heard is more stable... This is why I assumed 
he was
speaking of X (this is an X list after all)
I find Win98 definitely buggy (at least a couple of crashes a day) but keep one 
version because of
the drivers and the possibility to go back to MSDOS for messing around.
Basically any comparison linux win should be done with either NT (stable but not even 
a driver for
USB) or 2000 (or for potential slaves XP professional)
