Um, it's been a while, but as I remember Solaris came with its own
implementation of X11, and its own X server.  You didn't say you
installed XFree86, let alone which version.

Also, when it asks for your login, is it a graphic screen, or just text?

Also, you didn't say anythin about what kind of equipment you're using. 
We'll need a bit more information before we can offer any advice.
