It is stored on ONE machine of your choosing - presumably one of the office
ones.

I have no experience with this but DSL speeds should make home access to the
data on the office machine ok - a little slow on startup/shutdown. However -
FileMaker has stability problems if two machines are using the data and one
of them crashes. Dropping of the phone line is likely to look like a crash
so remote work has more failure modes. The cure is frequent backups or use
FileMaker Server.

You backup the machine that has the data frequently, i.e. every time you
aren't willing to redo what you have done from the last backup. You only
need to backup one directory containing the data files. Most people do this
to either a Zip disk or a writable CD.
