To add to Anne's response, you add "merge fields" directly in-line to
the text of a letter by selecting the "Merge Field" menu item (on the
Insert menu in FMP version 5). You get the list of fields Anne
describes, but the field drops into the text at the location of the
cursor, rather than onto the layout as a standard field.
