Hmmm, that's interesting. When I first did this I selected the nodes with a bounding box but I had actually selected the way. when I set the way to highway=turning_circle it turned the circular way into a shaded polygon which I thought was pretty cool as it seemed to visually represent what I was trying to do. I have gone back and turned the circular way into a residential, which removed the shaded polygon and instead set the nodes to turning_circle which put rectangles around the selected nodes.
