I am sure that someone will say "tag for meaning/description, not for 
renderers". It is right, of course. But when renderers get odd, one 
cannot always be pure :-)

That said, I started using width on rivers when I mapped a footpath 
along the bank of a river and the renderers showed it inside the river!
The default rendering width seemed to assume a very major river. In this 
case, width=n communicates essential information to the renderers.
