If you want to capture straight to computer, you need to get some sort of capture card, like the DAZZLE TV card. I know they have a pcmcia version, I don't know if they have Mac OS X drivers. Basically, from what I know, firewire is only a transfer protocol, so there's no real way to get it to do what you want to. The problem lies within the camera, not necessarily the iMovie program. The Camera will only transfer when in the Play mode, when in the recording mode it turns off the computer transfer part.
