I'm sticking with Fedora, even on some servers. For the real mission critical servers that must remain stable at all costs, I plan to continue running RedHat 7.3 for the next year or two, backporting security patches. There's also a project to continue security updates for redhat 7.3. If you were running 9, there's no reason not to upgrade to fedora core. If you're running 7.3, you might consider Whitebox linux, which is a recompile of Redhat Enterprise Linux sources (making it equivalent in every way to RHEL, except you can obtain it without buying a service contract). Note that RHEL can only be obtained from RedHat with a service contract, and that contract stipulates that you can only install RHEL on one machine (and the contract can only cover one machine). However, the OS itself is still GPL, and if you obtained an iso of it from a source other than RedHat, you can legally use it. Also, if you cancel your contract with RedHat, or it expires, you can continue using RHEL and install it on as many machines as you'd like. So really all this slashdot talk is really a tempest over nothing, in my opinion. Other alternatives (commercial) include SuSE, which is expected to grow in popularity. Debian, is, well, Debian. And always will be. Mandrake, well, expect them to struggle greatly in the enterprise market. Gentoo will never make strong inroads in the enterprise server arena. That's okay, though, since gentoo is aimed more at the hacker end user community.
