I've never found a /boot partition to be necessary, or even useful.
Supposedly it's so that you don't accidentally hose your boot files
(kernel and grub/lilo config).  But if you hose your root partition,
you're screwed anyway.  It's just a lot better to boot off a knoppix CD,
chroot into your hard drive, and start repairs from there.
