I've done the same thing actually when I left a Mandrake install going once 
while I went to class and someone thought they'd be funny and set the root 
password for me and finish the install without setting anything.  X was not 
configured so it didn't start.  So I just did the update and it installed the 
right packages for me and poof, X started at install.
