Sometimes it helps to ask the obvious questions. Here I go:
        Are you sure that you can play other sounds? Are any of your audio channels 
muted? You can check using alsamixer. Are audio permissions set correctly? Do 
you own /dev/dsp? Do you own /dev/mixer?
        There was a bug in a previous version of ALSA (whatever version was standard 
on Gentoo in November) where on certain laptops (such as my HP) if you 
unmuted all audio channels there would be no sound. Are you using ALSA? If so 
try muting all channels, and unmuting them one at a time to see if you get 
any sound. This is fixed in all ALSA releases since December, but Mandrake 
might be using that older version.
