Killing the X process isn't destructive, and you could certainly do that. I don't know very much about SuSe, but in some distros (esp. Redhat and the similar ones) , dropping to runlevel 3 is a more standard way of exiting X (just type /sbin/init 3 as root). > killing of the process the way to go?
